Vision Rehabilitation and Therapy: This is a prescribed treatment used to enhance and/or develop visual skills so that there is a higher level of visual efficiency. When we do this type of therapy, we are truly enhancing the connections between the eye and the brain. In essence, what we are doing is building more efficient and connected neural pathways.
The Three R’s of Therapy:
1) Re-wiring: This is where we change the mechanism of getting visual skills from the eye to the brain. By creating new visual experiences through lenses, prisms and therapy, the visual system rewires itself and makes new connections to allow for more efficient processing.
2) Re-education: Once we re-wire, we must break our old bad visual habits and create the new and improved visual habits. This is done with vision re-education therapy and is part of a good vision rehabilitation and therapy program.
3) Retention: Hopefully once we have completed the steps above, the patient continues to remind the system what it has learned so that the changes will become permanent.
The goal of completing these three steps is to teach the patient to better use their visual system to decrease visual stress and to allow more visual efficiency and performance thereby improving the patients quality of life.
