Our Vision Therapy Program:

Our vision therapy program consists of an individualized plan of treatment procedures using lenses, prisms, instrumentation, visual exercises, and occlusion meant to return the patient to normal vision. A trained therapist under the direction of the doctor works with the patient twice a week for a period from two to six months, depending upon the nature and severity of the patient's condition and how often the patient is seen in the office. Usually home therapy is also prescribed to reinforce the new skills the patient is learning at the doctor's office. Eye patching can be a part of the treatment program. The patient is regularly seen by the doctor for progress examinations as he or she proceeds through therapy and meets each set of treatment goals.

Some of our Specific Vision Rehabilitation and Therapy Programs:

All of our vision rehabilitation and therapy programs are designed for the individual and no two programs are exactly alike.  However, there are some general concepts based on the type of program that you or your child needs.

Vision-related learning problems:  These programs emphasize fundamental input and visual processing skills required for efficient learning, reading, math, writing and spelling.

Strabismus and/or Amblyopia:  For patients with strabismus (turned eye) and amblyopia (lazy eye), we work on skills that enhance focusing ability, convergence ability, depth perception, visual-spatial skills, tracking, integration of central and peripheral vision and ultimately binocularity.

Visual Sensory Integration Problems:  We work on a variety of skills to help integrate the visual system with the vestibular system (balance), proprioceptive system (touch), auditory system (hearing) and Kinesthetic system (movement).  We will focus on visual-spatial skills, central-peripheral integration, eye-hand coordination and visual perceptual skills.

Traumatic or Acquired Brain Injury:  There are several sets of problems that we see in this group of patients.  There can be acquired strabismus (eye turn) due to a cranial nerve palsy, a visual field defect (loss of one side or part of one side of the vision field), neglect (loss of awareness of space), visual midline shift or visual-vestibular integration problems.  Based on the nature of the problem or problems, we work to enhance the visual skills of the individual so that they can regain as much visual function as possible and to improve the quality of life.

Sports Vision Enhancement:  Any athlete whether its the high school or college athlete, professional athlete, competitive sports athletes or even weekend athlete can benefit by sports vision enhancement.  Skills that we work on may include: reaction time, eye-hand-body integration, improved focus, improved depth perception, visual concentration and visual-spatial skills.

Testimonial

We have been thoroughly pleased with Dr. Shidlofsky, Dr. Lowell, and Jenna.  They kept us informed and gave Shane lots of positive reinforcement along the way.  And the staff was always incredibly helpful and friendly too.

What more can I say?  My child's life and our life has been changed forever.  Vision therapy was truly a godsend for us and we will be eternally grateful.

Dawn A.
